How do you keep your dog in shape?

- traditional leash walking
- long leash or offleash walking/hiking/etc
- dog sports/trained work
- allowing them in backyard or on large property
- dog park, play group, or something comparable
- interactive games, fetch, flirt poles, etc
- treadmill
- dog is elderly/disabled/cannot get much exercise
- other!

I’d love to hear your stories. Post your dog’s name, age and breed. Be specific about your routines!

Oh, and if you’re a lazy bum who just lets your dog out into the backyard for a poop and nothing more, don’t compain on here when they jump all over guests and try to smash through the window to chase the squirrels..
Julie, you’re a bit ignorant when it comes to all the ways possible to exercise a dog, eh? I take it you’re a “person with a dog” rather than a “dog person.

Bindi 2 years, belgian malinois, Max, lab 4-5 years old.

We get a lot of use out of our nice backyard. The three of us go out there together several times a day. I enjoy watching Max and Bindi play chase and wrestling games.

We work on obedience, agility, rally, play tug, hide and seek, work on tricks etc. Each one also gets one on one time as well.

Inside they are kept busy with kongs, and other toys.

Max gets to go for walks around town, I’d love to take Bindi but she’s developed a fear of walking after some bad experiences with loose dogs. As part of her training I’m teaching her that the world isn’t so scary, and I’ve got her back. Eventually she’ll be out walking with Max and I again.

Next summer I’m adding the following our backyard:

More agility equipment, currently I have a couple jumps, two tunnels and weaves. I want to add an A-frame, dog walk, some more jumps and a teeter.

Second sandbox: The dogs will have one and the kids will have one. No one could quite figure out the “take turns” thing with the current sandbox.

Flyball box, and a wading pool.

There aren’t any dog parks or play groups here, I wouldn’t go if there was, with the way people are here it could end up bad.

On occassion we do head out to the family farm. 220 acres of land with a creek, and some “mini-woods”.

I’m always on the look out for things to add to our exercise and mental stimulation activities. So if asked again in a few months, there’d probably be more to add.
